Measures to compensate rice fields damaged by rain.- The Minister of Agriculture says

Due to the heavy rains in the past few days, hundreds of acres of paddy fields in Hambantota district, which were close to harvesting, have been destroyed.

These paddies, which had been cultivated very successfully, have now been seriously damaged due to flooding.

Yesterday (09) Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera went to several areas including Tangalle Netolpitiya to visit the fields damaged by the rain.

The minister who expressed his views here -

"About 2,000 acres of Hambantota district were destroyed by continuous drought for seven or eight months. Although the farmers managed to save some paddy fields with great difficulty, hundreds of acres of paddy fields have been destroyed by the rain. Paddy fields, but due to being under water for several days, the paddy seeds have sprouted on the trees and they cannot harvest again.

I know that the farmers took care of these fields with great difficulty. Therefore, we are working to provide them with proper compensation for this crop damage. I spoke to the Agriculture and Rural Insurance Board today. I gave instructions to the higher officials to start the work of providing proper compensation to the rice fields damaged by drought and rain.

The Agriculture and Agrarian Insurance Board has already started gathering information related to crops affected by the rain.

We will never allow injustice to our farmers. The damage done to these plantations will be properly assessed and steps will be taken to provide compensation. But I don't believe that the crop damage caused by drought and rain can be compensated only by compensation. This destruction is the fault of the people of the country. The damage that has been caused cannot be calculated and ended only with compensation money," the minister said.
