Proposal to increase bus fares to be submitted to the Cabinet today

The proposal to increase bus fares is scheduled to be submitted to the Cabinet today (23).

Along with the increase in fuel prices, the prices of Sri Lanka White Diesel have also increased.

The National Transport Commission says that when that figure is adjusted to the formula for increasing bus fares, it has affected the current bus fares by more than 10%.

Accordingly, a Cabinet memorandum has been submitted to obtain cabinet approval to implement the new bus fare increase, says the Commission's Director General, Dr. Nilan Miranda.

However, several bus associations said that the bus fare revision should take place yesterday (22) itself, and although representatives of those associations approached the Commission requesting a discussion regarding the fare revision, no proper response has been received.

However, the bus associations say that they will take steps to withdraw buses from service today (23).

The reason for this, they point out, is that the relevant bus fares were not revised yesterday (22).

The Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association, Mr. Gemunu Wijeratne, says that it is not possible to operate buses that increase bus fares.
