The Irrigation Department has warned that several Divisional Secretariat Divisions may experience large-scale flooding due to significant rainfall in the upper and middle reaches of the Maha Oya basin.
Accordingly, the low-lying areas of the Maha Oya Valley belonging to the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Alavwa, Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Pannala, Wennappuwa, Negombo, Katana, Narammala and Dankotuwa may experience a large level of flooding.
Also, the Irrigation Department stated that the floodgates of Danduru Oya, Tabbowa, Weheralagala, Lunugamwehera, Mawara and Udawalawa reservoirs have been opened further.
Our reporter mentioned that many low-lying lands and houses in Bagavantlawa have been flooded due to the overflow of Keselgamuyoya along with the heavy rains that fell in Bagwantlawa Mahaeliya Reserve and Bagwantlawa.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology stated that today (20th) there may be heavy rain of about 75 mm in several provinces and districts of the island.
